| How
It Works...
The
Controller included with the Palisade EST provides a pulse of electricity
every 1.2 seconds. When this pulse is discharged, the storage sack
is activated via the exterior woven circuitry. The discharged pulse
registers at ~5,000 volts. This discharge is ample enough to discourage
repeated attempts from potential invaders, while also insuring that
the animal is not harmed.
The
Palisade EST is easily deactivated with a press of a button.
Once deactivated, the storage sack is not 'live' and can be handled
and packed easily with no fear of shock to the handler. |

Introduction...
Palisade EST Operating Introduction and Instruction
Before using the Palisade EST, it is critical that you take the time to familiarize yourself with the product and how it is intended to be used. This procedural outline will inform you of the proper use of the Palisade EST. Following this overview, additional instruction and tips are included in regard to proper backcountry use.
Keep in mind that a product can only work as well as it was intended to if it is being used correctly in the first place! There is no shame in practicing and we encourage you to do just that in advance of using the Palisade EST on your next backcountry adventure.
The Controller
The controller is responsible for supplying the electrical pulse to the exterior woven circuitry on the outside of the Palisade EST 450, 600, or 900 Storage Sack.
Notice the distinct yellow button labelled PRESS on the center of the controller. By pressing this button, you are able to activate and deactivate the controller as well as initiate the diagnostic functions of the controller. These functions will be explained later in the instructions.
Also notice the plug (male) that is attached to the positive and negative terminals of the Controller. Before activation, it is important to check that both terminals are tight. Turn the terminals clockwise to tighten them.
The controller requires (2) AA batteries (included) to be used properly. When the batteries are installed correctly, the Controller will chirp, and a red LED light (just above PRESS) will blink.
At this point the unit is not activated, but is ready to be connected to the Palisade EST 450, 600, or 900. |
Palisade EST Activation and Deactivation

To activate and deactivate the Palisade EST is very straight forward. The first step is to connect the Controller to the Storage Sack. This is accomplished by locating and unzipping the zippered pocket on the bottom of the Storage Sack. Once unzipped, you will notice a Female Plug that is positioned at the top interior of the pocket and is routed through an interior grommet. From this point, simply align the Male Plug located on the Controller with the Female Plug on the Storage Sack. Press the plugs together until they are locked.

After the Female and Male Plugs are locked together, slide the Controller into the open pocket. Arrange the Controller so that it is positioned vertically. If you do not wish to activate the Palisade EST at this time, simply close the zipper.
To activate the Palisade EST, open the zippered pocket. Grasp one of the two webbing loops provided with your left hand, and slide your right hand behind the Controller. Lightly pinch the Controller between your fingers and thumb. With your thumb, apply firm pressure quickly to the yellow PRESS button.
When activated, the red LED light (just above the PRESS button) will blink in succession every ~1.2 seconds, and you will hear a slight ‘pulse’ from the Controller. The Palisade EST is now activated!* Slide your right hand out from behind the Controller and close the zippered pocket. To deactivate the Palisade EST simply reverse the aforementioned process. When deactivated, the LED no longer blinks.
*When activated, avoid contact with the exterior woven circuitry! |
Diagnostic Functions
The Controller provided with the Palisade EST has built in diagnostic functions that allow you to check possible circuitry faults, battery life, and output voltage. Using the diagnostics is not difficult, but we encourage you to familiarize yourself with the functions before backcountry use.
Initializing the Diagnostics
1) Firmly press and hold the yellow PRESS button. A short chirp and a single flash of the red LED light will be followed by the red LED light being illuminated for approximately three seconds. When the red LED light remains illuminated, release the PRESS button.
2) While the red LED light is on, quickly press the yellow PRESS button one, two, or three times to check which diagnostic function you are interested in.
A- Press One: Fault Report
B- Press Two: Battery Life
C- Press Three: Output Voltage
The red LED light will then flash and the Controller will chirp ‘X’ number of times to give you information about how the energizer is operating.
1-Fault Report:
A) One: No Fault
B) Three: The output voltage has been low for a prolonged period of time, this is usually caused by a short circuit. Check to see that the white strips are not folded over themselves, or touching each other.
C)Four: The batteries are nearly exhausted, check and replace.
D)Six:The output voltage is fluctuating, probably just an intermittent problem.
E)Seven:Device malfunction, contact Wilderness Solutions for service.
2– Battery Life*:
Battery life is reported by the Controller flashing and chirping 1-10 times. Each flash and chirp represents 10% of the batteries total remaining energy. For example, if you check the battery life and the Controller flashes and chirps (6) times, that is an indication that the batteries have 60% of their energy remaining. Knowing that fresh Alkaline Batteries provide ~75 hrs of use at full charge, it is easy to deduce that with 60% battery life to expend, the Controller will be powered for another ~45 hrs.
*Lithium batteries can be used, and will run for ~96 hrs, (the equivalent of ~12 nights assuming ~8 hr sleep) but prevent the battery check diagnostic function from operating accurately due to lithium batteries energy release.
3– Output Voltage:
Output Voltage is reported by (2) sequences of flashes and chirps. There is a pause between sequences which represents a decimal point. For Example, (4) flashes and chirps followed by a short pause, is then followed by (5) flashes and chirps translates to the number 4.5. This number represents the kilovolt output of the Controller. Thus a report of 4.5 would represent 4,500 volts as the output voltage. |
Backcountry Use Procedure...
Proper Use
1) Before activating your Palisade EST, you must locate a suitable spot to position the unit. A dry, non-conductive surface such as evergreen duff, a flat rock, a bed of fallen branches, or gravel are optimal. If possible, finding a location that offers protection from poor weather (snow, rain, hail, etc) is also important. Place the Palisade EST at least 100 yds from your intended camp, as well as 100 yds from a water source. Do not tie the Palisade EST Storage Sack to any object.
2) After you have determined a location, make sure that the white electrifying strips running around the Storage Sack are straight, unfolded, and not touching each other. Place all possible attractants inside the Storage Sack. (Attractants include but are not limited to food, toiletries, clothing, etc). To work optimally, the Storage Sack should be as full as possible. It may be necessary to place unused clothing, or other soft gear inside your Palisade to “fill out” the bag before it is activated. The Palisade EST should be placed so the Wilderness-Solutions Label is facing the ground.
3) Activate the Palisade EST as described in the Palisade EST Activation and Deactivation procedural outline. |
Packing, Storage, and Care
Be careful not to over-stuff, fold, or crush the Palisade EST. When packing the Palisade into your backpack, do not excessively fold or crush the white electrifying strips on the exterior of the bag. Doing so will increase the long-term durability of the Palisade EST. When not in use, we recommend removing the batteries, disconnecting the Controller, and storing the Storage Sack uncompressed. The Palisade EST is lined with a silicone impregnated nylon liner, which is easy to clean. Should a spill take place, wipe the interior liner down with a damp cloth. A damp cloth may also be used to clean the exterior of the Storage Sack. Be certain that the Controller is not activated before doing so! The Storage Sack will dry very quickly by pulling the interior liner inside out.
Although the Palisade EST and its individual components are weatherproof, the Palisade EST should never be submerged or placed in water. |
Group Use...
Optional Array Link
If you are an individual using multiple Storage Sacks or traveling with a group of people, the optional Array Link allows you to use a single controller to provide electrical current for up to three Storage Sacks of any size combination.
The Array Link is an easy, cost effective way to protect your caloric resources. If you plan to link more than (3) Storage Sacks together, than each additional Palisade EST (beyond 3 units), requires an additional Array Link. (EX: 8 = 6 Array Links)
